IGNITION SYSTEM

Hi Milt. There is a sequence of checkoffs that most cars do before they allow you to start the car. If your foot is on the break and the car is in park, and your steering wheel is unlocked, then there's a sensor telling your car that one of those things isn't happening. You probably need to put this one in front a professional. Good luck!
is the car stick or auto if its automatic it most likely the ignition switch need to be replaced...common problem with the 900s due to that fact that its low on the console and gets all the dirt and crap falling in it if its a stick shift car check the reverse lockout switch but from what you decribed it sounds like the ingition switch is bad not easy to change and nither is the revese lockout switch good luck
be sure that the car is in reverse gear. Also, you may need to use some liquid lock- ease stuff, the crud in the ignition (or a coffee spill!) will lock it. Graphite might work, but the spray on graphite substitute will also dry out any damp crud.... of course, if this was 3 years ago you obviously found some solution...
