It depends on what is actually making the noise and when it is making it. If the engine is tapping after you shut it off, that is normal. If it tapps when it is running, that is bad. It could be a valve tap or something as small as a small whole in the exhaust manifold. I wouldn't chance a vehicle with 160,000 miles that taps if the sound is coming from the motor.
It's more of a ticking sound owner says it stops after warming up?
WHAT SIZE ENGINE DOES IT HAVE. IF IT IS A 5.4 AND IT TAPS OR TICKS WHEN U TURN IT ON THEN IT IS NORMAL. I ASKED A MECHANIC FRIEND OF MINE THE SAME THING BEFORE I BOUGHT MY EXPEDITION. IT STOPS AFTER IT WARMS UP
I have a 2004 Ford f-150 that has made a tapping sound since I bought it with 20k miles. It has 189k miles and stills makes that sound. A mechanic said It was a lifter knocking.
