Check Engine Light On after charging the battery?

Asked by Brittany Feb 02, 2013 at 09:30 AM about the 2008 Mazda MAZDA6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, my 2008 Mazda 6 died after I
left an inside light on overnight. My
boyfriend jumped it and we were
leaving anyways so right after we
drove 90 miles. No problems at all
until I get home and my dad decides
to charge the battery to 100% with a
battery charger and the next time I
drove it the CE light came on.
Everytime we reset it it comes back
on. The dealer said it is a engine
timing problem and they would have
to take the engine apart to fix costing
over $1000! Also, they said if I don't
get it fixed it's fine and the car will
run "forever". I do not want to pay to
fix something that doesn't NEED to
be fixed, but my dad wants to sell the
car and does not want the light on
when he does. Has anyone had this
problem, will doing anything fix this
issue like unattaching and
reattaching something? Help! Also, it
only has 55k and has never had any
problems even driving up till today w
the light on.

If your battery went dead only because that light was left on, there was absolutely no reason to put a charger on it after driving 90 miles, especially if you were not having trouble before. When the dealer said 'timing problem" he probably meant the belt, it must be inspected/replaced even if you are having no trouble and at 55,000 miles, that is just about the time to do that. If it breaks, and I think that is an interference engine, you are talking major damage. You probably have the 2.3L I4 BUT if you have the MZI v6 that engine has a chain, not a belt

some of these vehicle have to have the crankshaft sensor and cam shaft sensor relarned after replacing battery, sounds like dealer wanting to replace timing belt which is due if not been replaced, check your local auto parts store and have them pull codes in computer and see if code is crank or cam sensor code, and have them clear code and see if your light comes back on
