You can check the fluid level, maybe easily. I know on the 2003 the tranny is sealed and the level is not easily checked. Adding fluid, if needed, should allow you to get to a tranny shop for repairs. Other than a leaking pan gasket, the repair will probably be beyond your ability.
My 2002 ford explorer starts, goes in reverse, but when you put it in drive it doesnt move. I believe it is also leaking transmissiin fluid as well.

My 2000 ford explorer won't move in Drive or reverse. I can put it into 1st or 2nd gear and it will drive with those. Transom fluid doesn't look good, not brown but not like it should either.
