what do you check if cd player will not work?

Usually in this case, if it's all one unit, the laser eye which reads the disc had failed and that's why only the radio portion works. If you have recently unhooked the battery, it may have a security feature that will lock out the disc player in case of theft. Check your owners manual for that feature. May be a reset code.

2014 Kia sorento radio works but it want let you put a cd in the CD player don't say nothing

Doblo_2046, Pull the fuse for the radio. Wait for a couple of minutes, then put fuse back. See if that will fix the issue.
