Interior lights do not work when door is opened
Asked by Tony Apr 06, 2014 at 02:18 PM about the 2005 Kia Sorento EX 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
At first the back seat overhead light stopped working. Kia said it would be over $1,000.00 to repair it. Font overheads still worked but now they no longer work when a door is opened. Both front and rear still work manually.

Sounds like its just the door switch, what did the dealer say they where going to do for a $1000?
It could be this switch: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2006-06-Kia-Sedona-interior-light-switch-dimmer-control-door-light-switch-OEM-/181323367988?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a37b70634&vxp=mtr
I posted a reply but I guess it did not take. The control unit may be the culprit as the Kia Dealer said it was some type of control unit. Thanks for the speedy reply.
Michael l don't have that style of control unit as mine has the 4X4 switch where the light off and on switch is. I also have a cruise control switch in mine. I'll check the door switches.
I had the same thing happen in my 06 Sorento. Dome light, driver window, driver seat all stop working at random times. Had the dome light replaced at the dealer for 100. Talked to a friend who is a Kia mechanic and learned that the sorento has a ton of electrical issues that the dealer is aware of but didn't issue a recall on. Just biding my time til I can get a new car....
I have the exact same thing... first the dome went, then the front lights and the rear hatch. So frustrating! It is not the switch, as the lights on the doors still work when open.
My brother works for a dealer ship,my map lites, and my back seat lite works when the door opens, but I cant turn them on my self, the dimmer switch by the change box on your right,is were the dimmer switch is,and it broke,so now I have to get one,and put it in,it fits like a xmas set fits, male and female connecters.
I have a 2004 Sorento and have done some digging to find that the culprit may be an inline resistor behind the driver side front left kick panel near the floor board. I have found this part for about $14 and am going to try this on my car. Try your dome light and see if it comes on if you turn it on with the light switch when your doors are closed? If so, it is not the dome light itself, or the door switch, nor the light switch.
Pete any luck with changing/ replacing that resistor?
Same problem with my 2008 2.5 diesel Sorento. I changed the room light assembly. It was fine for about a month. Same problem again. The room light turns on by itself and the only way to turn it off is to disconnect its cable. I tested the door switches and they are OK. Is it the resistor:
My mechanic solved the problem by fixing the cable that had lost its insulation properties. My car had lost all its torque too, and to climb any hill I had to change gears manually. He did so by cleaning all the air passageso in the motor including turbine and intercooler. That old Sorento problem of sudden power decrease can be fixed by pumping manually
on top of t the Racor filter. That's for the 2008 2.5 Diesel model. Best car I ever had.
Who gave Kia license to keep producing thrash in this country? Does it mean no one is seeing all this consumer complaint?
I have a 2008 Kia Sorento with 211,000 miles and just replaced the spark plugs and a catalytic converter. It has been a great car. I’ve had “dome light” quit working twice The culprit has been a $16 plug in diode behind the kick panel on the driver side in the wire bundle to the left of the fuse box. It is a very quick repair and lasts for years. Do you lights in the front do not work with the door as they are “map lights” not your normal dome lights.

If door switch does not put interior light on (bad contact) Doors lock within seconds ,make sure your key is in your pocket.
