Gas tank swap

Asked by 11hillbilly11 Nov 28, 2017 at 03:59 PM about the 2004 Chrysler Sebring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring sedan. I'm having
an issue with raw gas leaking from tank area. I
have removed and inspected tank, nothing obvious
to the eye. I'm wanting to go to my local Salvage
yard and get another tank, and all too hose and
pump. I'd like to find a compatible swap. Any
information would be great. I know other models
should be interchangeable. Just don't know what
make and models?

Yes, have also removed tank for full visual inspection. No obvious points of a leak. Yet, constantly puddles of are fuel. I'm thinking it may be a problem with evap system or fuel pump. But I have a Salvage yard local. I'm sure I can replace the whole tank and pump and all as a swap out. Just trying to find interchangeable models and makes to it so I can aquire said tank and just swap it.

Be VERY careful doing what I am about to suggest if you decide to go ahead with it... common sense will dictate why. You'll need an air compressor, an air wand (preferably with a long skinny snout or a 6" piece of rubber hose on a regular one) and a rag. You'll need to wrap the rag tightly around the air wand and fit it snuggly into the fuel filler neck, you're going to use SHORT LIGHT bursts of air to create a LITTLE BIT of pressure in the tank pending there's no air leaks to be found. If you hear air escape that may be where your leak is or you may start to see fuel and be able to trace it's origin. If you're careful and don't add too much pressure nothing bad should happen, I've used this method to empty fuel tanks on carburated vehicles without any issues
