2003 Dodge Durango running hot but the coolant is full,

my 2003 Dodge Durango gage is reading hot but the coolant is full, why is
this? there is a small leak of some sort but my radiator is less than 2yrs old.

Can a closed thermostat cause the engine coolant to back up and flow out of the overflow?

My 03 dodge durango is fine when it's driving but when it's parked running that's when the gauge shoots up just a little before hot I don't know y?
