2001 Dodge Neon won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car suddenly quit running while being driven.
Ignition is fine but will not start. It will start and run
for 10-15 seconds if starter fluid is sprayed down
the air intake at the air filter. I have replaced the
fuel pressure regulator with new unit but it made
no difference. How do I test to see if problem is
with the fuel pump or the injectors? I am
suspecting it is electrical in nature as car was
running fine then just quit. I checked the fuses and
relays. Am I missing something obvious or simple?

Replace the fuel pump. If it starts with starting fluid it need a new fuel pump cos it's not getting gas. You can loan a tool to check the new pressure regulator you installed at auto zone or Oriely.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Looks like a bit of work and $s to replace the fuel pump. But have to fix it. Bob

Run tank empty or syphon out the gas. Put on jack stands and remove the tank straps with a jack underneath to prevent it from falling. Undo the 2 bolts on the tank seal and remove old fuel pump. Attach the electrical hookup and fuel line the same way you remove it and it shouldn't take you more than an hour and save you a few $100 bucks.

Thanks for the help and advice. New fuel pump did the trick. Pretty much plug and play once I got the fuel tank out. It is an oldie but a clean Texas car so worth the effort.
