Is it true that one's car will not pass the smog test if the "check engine" light has been on for awhile (not flashing or blinking) & won't go off? I seem to recall being told that the light could be turned on by something as "harmless" as a malfunctioning gas cap, which I wouldn't think would affect smogging results.

In my state (Ohio) if the CEL is on it's an automatic failure. You're wasting your time pulling into the testing station with that light on.

Not only will your car not pass if the CEL is on it will not pass until you complete a drive cycle.
