brakes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I put my emergency brake on and got out of my van briefly, and when I got
back in and released it and drove away, I noticed my dash "brake" icon was
still on, so I pulled the release again an it wasn't engaged. I parked and
turned off the engine, but there was another motor noise coming from under
the hood. I is some kind of motor located under the battery and I have to
assume it has something to do with the ABS system? I disconnected my
battery to stop it....

That might have been an ABS hydraulic control unit vibrating. It may be a hung up ebrake cable causing it to chatter like that.
Sometimes you can free a hung up ebrake by driving in reverse and braking several times. Otherwise you may need to pull the rear disc/drum.
Thanks Ken, but I tried that this morning and no luck. It makes sense that it would be the control unit. I don't understand how that would effect the e brake though? Could you explain? Thanks again!! Dayne
I'm not a brake expert so I don't want to give misleading advice. Have a shop check for ABS codes. If you want to avoid shop fees, then try and remove the rear rotors (or drums) or at least check the ebrake is free and working. I mean the ebrake might not have anything to do with your current problem, and was just coincidental. Also if you are still hearing noises from that area, trace along the brake lines from the master cylinder, you'll come to the combination valve and hydraulic control unit. You can at least confirm or eliminate those as the source for the noise.
