Why does my 2000 ranger 4w drive CLUNK when engaged

when I engage the 4 wheel drive and drive a half an hour away my truck will  
clunk up to 14 times. It wont clunk in 2 wheel drive. and it won't go into 4 low. It
will only go into 4 high, then I drive a little, Clunk, drive a little further Clunk .

What conditions are you driving in? pavement? Dirt? Mud? Is your truck a manual shift transfer case or is it select shift?

I only use my 4 wheel drive on snow on pavement. I swtch to 4 wheel drive on the dash. I don't have to lock the hubs. When in 4 wheel it is difficult. To make a turn
