I would ask someone with some expertise to take that out, so that you don't damage anything by accident.

Things to look at are your ignition switch/nuetral safety switch. Under the column is either a small hole, or a stamped mark where a hole was supposed to be. Stick a paperclip up there to release your key.

I have similar symptoms with my 2002 AWD Envoy SLT. The shifter moves freely from Park to 1, but doesn't stop at any of the normal detents and the key will not come out unless you press the release on the underside of the steering column. I read all the available comments and took the console apart to get to the interlock solenoid. I removed the solenoid mounting screws but left the electric connector attached, the key turned all the way OFF and could be removed. There is a sleeve over the shift bar that slides up and down the shaft, allowing the plunger on the interlock microswitch to extend fully and complete the circuit that tells the ignition switch the car is in PARK. However, the sleeve is frozen in the down position. I can barely budge it using a long screwdriver as a lever. There is something about the plunger in the center of the shifter that connects with the unlock button on the top of the shifter handle and this is preventing the sleeve from sliding properly. The shifter is a single assembly, about $100 on Ebay or $10 at a parts yard. Huge pain in the rear end but much cheaper than taking it to a shop.

This is the second time the battery has died (about 5 years apart) and the vehicle never provides any warning - just dead. And learned the last time the key does not come out, supposedly as a safety precaution. Just stupid. AND not I can'e lock the car so it's stuck in the work parking lot overnight. If anything gets stolen I'll be angry.
