It looks like it will. Early Chevy 454 cid engines were used in 1970's 'muscle cars like the Corvette and Camaro but beginning in 1988 another 454cid (7.4Liter)240hp design was use in 4th generation GMC Sierras, 1988 to 2000. Your 5.0L 302 cid produces 175hp. Also a 200hp 5.7L will work. It's going to be a bit expensive, but it's your money to spend as you see fit ....recommend no used engine and PCM will have to come with whatever you get, among other components that are unpredictable as for what when you do the swap. But if your 305 runs well and you just want more hp, that is the ONLY reason, there are less expensive things you can do. Shame to take out a good, proven 175hp engine. (Not 'shame on you' not personal, just a shame to pull a good motor

Assuming you have a 1/2 ton. It will be easier than you think Dave. The motor will drop in with no clearance issues. I cannot recall if you have to change motor mounts. The exhaust may? need to be modified. You need to find a truck with a stock TBI 454 (3/4 - 1 ton) and remove the motor and the PROM in the ECM. All wiring will be the same just swap your 305 chip for the 454 one (It should run on your chip but no very well). The tranny is a different story. Your truck has a 4L60 or 4L60e it will bolt up but, the 454 will distroy it. There are some options but it depends on if you have a 2wd or 4wd.

Whoa. The best way would be to search for a wrecked 454 ss and swap the motor and tranny, also grab the wiring and computer. This would give you all the parts you require. The early ones came with a TH-400 (the wiring for the kick down is different you may need to swap the harness?) And the newer ones have the 4L80e. I guess they had some issues but they would be better than any 700r4, 4L60 or 4L60e. If you have a 60e you will need to remove the brain (TCU - Transmission Control Unit) and wiring (drivers side inner fender I think) and install the TCU for the 80e and it's wiring. (Splicing may be required, Cannot remember how the TPS signal is sent to the TCU). If your truck has the 60 you will need to wire and mount the 80e's TCU or use the entire harness from the donor truck.

Or use an older TH-400, you will need a new drive shaft and rig up something for the kick down. Or a 4L80e from any 3/4 ton/1 ton with a stock 454 and you can purchase an aftermarket TCU to control it. I have a TCU from TCI (summit racing) it will run both the 60e and 80e. It is completely programable and has the ablity to enter an electric manual push button/paddle shift mode. You can also add a tow haul button to boost line pressure etc.

Or cam a 350? Mine has 225 at the crank with a cam and new springs?? Alot lighter. The motor in my pic is for sale? 390 hp at the crank???
yetilikesbeer where have you been? We need guys like you. I have to agree that the 4L60 won't hold up to anything with much more than 225 hp. I didn't think of that.

Minding my own business. Haha No I just moved up and have a office job. Need some breaks from work time to time, this site works. If they are built the clutches and band will last. But there are still a few internals that people overlook that may or may not last. They didn't change much coming from the 700r4 but the 4L60e is twice the tranny as that pile. We have 3 700r4 trucks and 4 cooked tranny's in a pile (+ 2 returned as core's) plus the one still in my '92 with only 1st. We have 2 parts trucks with cooked 4L60e's, another one with a rebuilt tranny and my brothers '98 is running out of life on lucus tranny fix. However for '99 they went to the new case/bellhousing but I believe the internals were the same (can't rem when they switched to the 65e), we are at 347,000 hard km's on our farm beater with the 5.3, and I mean hard km's and it doesn't skip a beat. That's my personal experience with the 700r4/4L60(e). I've had alot of TH-350 a couple 400's some 200's and a 200r4 they are more reliable and cheaper. However my brothers motor in my profile destroyed 2 TH-350's (in under 150 mi, haha). Rev's to fast and to hard, need a beefer pump and a higher stall in the torque converter or a 400.
