Starter gmc 350

Turn key, starter motor spins but no engaging
flywheel.. usually third try will engage and start
motor on one revolution, so it's a good strong
start.. it has been progressively gotten worse so I
replaced the solenoid. Put it on, same problem,
solenoid had no effect.. took it out and took starter
apart, and semi cleaned it. Bendix seemed fine and
the brushes were worn(not bad) and I filled slightly
on them.. bench tested and Bendix worked every
hit, put it on the truck and nothing is fixed or
different.. tried fidgeting with shifter(auto) and
different variations of sticking key in, tapping on
column, nothing seemed to make it worse or
better.. that's where I'm at, anyone have any insight
of what's going on? Where does the starter post
wire go(not the positive battery cable)? I tried
tracing it but the thought of tearing into the
taped/loomed wires makes me cringe... Please
and thank your for the advice, I may go get a
Bendix to replace before I spend money on a new
starter..

If the starter gear is spinning and not making good contact with fly wheel it's a shim issue or the teeth on the fly wheel in a couple spots are worn down. Check the fly wheel condition.
Both Bendix gear and flywheel teeth have normal wear on them, but nothing to suggest that it's barely catching.. but I will inspect the flywheel a little closer to see if the Bendix pops out and catches the face of the flywheel rather than the teeth, as maybe there is enough play in the bushing(that holds the starter shaft) that the Bendix moved enough to hit the face and not the teeth?..
This is a huge amount of work and trouble, not to mention expense when a new starter will probably fix the issue. If the starter spins then it is NOT an issue with the wiring going to the starter.
My weekend has already been fkd over so time isn't an issue for me, I'm single living on a farm.. I just like to have the experience in every situation that I'm put in, and to fix a problem like this is knowledge worth having for folks that don't have enough money to go buy a new starter.. Yes I do agree with you on it shouldn't be. Wiring problem, but I've seen stranger things happen lol.. I just pulled the starter back off and on the flywheel, from the tip of the tooth down, it's been worn down and about a 1/16 inch in the teeth, so I'm assuming this is a shim issue for it being the Bendix gear is catching the face of the flywheel and not making a grinding noise but rather just the noise of a spinning starter motor.. I do appreciate yalls advice
Do y'all think a hack saw blade would be too much of a shim?
The hacksaw shim worked... so far.. Hahaha... Cut a couple slots so the blade will fit around the bolts but not cut completely, about a 4 inch piece.. bolted It on and whammo, five starts and started every time she's started.. haha thanks again fellers
