Trying to get my vw started?

I have a 1971 vw super beetle! My question Is
it cranks like it want to start but doesn’t! I was
thinking it was the battery so got a new one
an still the same thing! if the spark plugs are
not on right would that be the case!

    in N sounds good long as you keep the gas to it.....chokes off when you let off.....not enough gas getting in? got a backfire now too......try to put it in gear and off it chokes.....suggestions?
