Rough idle and sputtering on cold mornings

Just purchased a 09 vw cc with 98000 miles. The
vehicle information system informed me that i
would need to sevice in 1000 miles. I assumed this
just meant get an oil change and i was going to get
a 100, 000 mile service as well. I reached the 1000
miles before i could schedule the services, but
really didnt think it was a big deal but two days
after the "service now" warning appeared i went
out to go to the store and when i started the car
there was very rough idling and the car seemed to
sputter and jump if u will. The check engine light
also came on. It was about 29 degrees outside. I
decided not to go to the store and went later after
it had warmed up and had no problems. The next
mrng, same thing except i left anyway and car
seemed to sputter when idle at lights and not have
the same amount of power when driving. An EPC
light also came on. I drive the car later that evening
and had no problems. Wondering is this a result of
the car needing to be serviced or should i even be
driving it.

Well now it is not a good idea to be driving it. One, I do not trust VW. But now you have to get the car in for service to get the problems resolved.

29 degrees is not very cold so you should not have any issues at that temp. Maybe you need a tune up and filter change. Try a good fuel system cleaner while you are at it.

what size engine does it have? sputtering is often an issue of a few different things such as blocked air ways such as clogged filters, dirty spark plugs can cause sputtering but usually it would be steady and not go away. clogged fuel filter could also cause this but also would be the same as spark plugs. check for signs of leaks as they can cause stutors some times. But i would peg this as a air way issue or throttle issue. i would say get a tune up and see if it helps. it really would not surprise me if there is an access amount of carbon in the engine intake system. Now one thing i would like to ask is what exactly happens when you go to start the car. does it make any wierd noises also when you push the throtle down like a rattling sound .

I have the same problem, changed coils, plugs, camshaft sensor, mass air flow sensor ....still the same....NO CODE except RANDOM MISFIRE. I believe it to be carbon on the intake valves. VERY common I read on these DIRECT INJECTION turbo engines on VW's and others. Get ready to tear the engine down and clean intake valves. You may want to see if you can get a mortgage on you house before you go to VW dealership. JUST A GREAT CAR.......to drive off a really high cliff.

Guys check pcv diaghragm usually goes bad. . Check spark plug gap .28-.32 check coils . Check intake.

If you have the 2.0L turbo, at that mileage you probably need your intake valves cleaned. my 2011 GTI was misfiring badly on cold start at 110k or so. Took the intake apart and the valves were filthy with carbon. blasted them off with walnut shells and runs amazing still at 122k. If you have metric tools and a weekend give it a shot.

After replacing the spark plugs and coils (no result) cleaning the intake carbon and replacing all injectors (no result) I find and fixed the problem by replacing the valve cover gasket
