Wow! I feel sorry for you if you have to do this. They say that timing chains are supposed to last the life of the car, obviously this is not true... Read this, by the way, changing out timing chain is much more involved than the timing belt.....This thread below talks about someone who needs this at 60,000 miles. https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/comments/31nmpo/i_h ave_a_2010_vw_jetta_20t_wolfsburg_edition_the/? st=irmp8xs0&sh=146ab451

Interesting, header says 97k, but, later says around 60,000 . Either way, it sucks...

How many miles are on your car? And, did you experience a failure, is the chain making a lot of noise or are you just wondering?? I had two previous VW's and they were a royal pain. I will NEVER purchase a VW again..

The car has 112,000. My wife and I remember having to change the one in our passatt at 80 to 90,000. Our daughter is looking at a 2010 jetta w/ the 5 cylinder motor and we asked dealer/ mechanic about it and he said they changed the motor so that this is no longer a necessary requirement. Just trying to save this kid the aggrevation 6 months down the road.

Brucetreen1-. Hi, everyone knows about having to change timing belts and they are less expensive labor than timing chains.... listen, if I were you I would run as fast as possible away from VW and the timing chains issues.if these cars are problems... I really don't like 5 cylinder cars, there's no natural balance with an odd number of cylinders as far as I'm concerned....I know that they will tell you that there's balance counter weights etc. , But, I'd rather have a Four or Six.. The mere fact that you had to change the timing chain in your Passat at 80 to 90 k is RIDICULOUS..... Timing chains are supposed to last the life of the car!! There's no quality control at VW and they've lied and cheated people on the emissions debacle, why would you believe anything they said?
