wont go into park

Suddenly my car will shift (and drive) in all gears except park. I can still crank the car in neutral (only) but need to be in park to completely turn the car off. I can turn it mostly off in neutral but not completely off (first click of crank mechanism so the batter is still engaged, I think). HELP!

There may be a button on the shifter knob to allow free movement of the shifter back into park. If not, put it in neutral and make sure you have free movment of the steering wheel (steering wheel not locked). With your foot on the brake and the key in the ON position forcefully push the shifter knob forward and see if it’ll go If not you may be faced with taking apart the dash console to see if possibly a part of the shifter has come off/come apart
