Infiniti / Nissan Corrosion Issues, Loss of Power, Stemming from Sunroof Clog
Hi everyone,
I'm reaching out to see if anyone has had similar issues with their Infiniti and
whether they've found a solution, particularly involving insurance claims or
getting Infiniti to take some responsibility.
I’ve been dealing with extensive issues on my 2013 Infiniti JX35 that began a
few months ago with multiple highway breakdowns where the vehicle lost
power suddenly and went into limp mode. Each time, the dash lights for Blind
Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision
Warning (FCW), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA), and Backup Collision
Intervention (BCI) would come on before it completely shut down. The car has
broken down on the highway three times as well as two more times in
driveways, and I've towed 5-6 times in the past few months. There were many
times that the dealership took the car for test drives but couldn't reproduce the
warning lights so other things were repaired just to have it break down again
on the drive home. On one visit the dealership said that my belt broke on a test
drive, took out my coolant hose, and needed $1200+ in repairs to bring it back
to the condition it was in when I had dropped it off. After several towing trips to
various mechanics, it was ultimately found that corrosion in the driver’s side
wiring harness was the root cause.
Here’s a summary of what’s happened so far:
• Repairs so far: Replaced the battery ($300), starter ($540),
crankshaft sensor ($430), and addressed a sunroof drain clog that caused
mold and water damage on the passenger side ($1425). Despite these
repairs, the issues persist.
• Corrosion Diagnosis: The dealership finally identified corrosion in
the driver’s side harness, which they suspect may also stem from water
intrusion. Unfortunately, replacing the wiring harness is estimated at
$11,000+, and the parts are no longer in production so they can't actually
perform the repair.
• Current Mileage: Approximately 179,000 km.
What makes this even more frustrating is that I’ve come across numerous
other Infiniti and Nissan owners online (Q50, Q60, QX30, G35, G37, QX50,
QX60) who report similar issues with clogged sunroof drains and water
damage, often leading to the same electrical malfunctions. There’s even a
related recall for the Nissan Rogue due to corrosion issues, which included a
fire risk: "The dash side harness is a set of wires and connectors located under
the dashboard. In the affected vehicles, water and salt could collect in the area
under the driver’s feet, then make their way up into the wiring harness. As a
result, the wire connectors could become corroded and damaged. Corroded
electrical connectors can cause various features to malfunction, and in rare
cases could cause a fire,"
I’ve tried reaching out to Infiniti for assistance, but it’s unclear if they’ll offer any
goodwill support.
Has anyone had success getting insurance to cover this kind of corrosion or
water damage under comprehensive coverage? Or has anyone managed to
get Infiniti to cover these repairs as a design-related issue? Any advice or
shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!
