This model originally had a plastic gear sprocket which drove the timing chain.Of course over time these got brittle and broke.The problem is well known and most owners had their plastic gear replaced with a steel gear and double metal chain drive like the older SL450... I prefer the 1980 or 81 SL450 to the Sl380s...... ask this question before buying.
