Car overheats with AC on only

Car started to overheat with AC on, does fine on the highway but in stop and go traffic starts to overheat. Turned off the AC and turned on the heat, temp drop back down. Car has 55K on it. What could be the likely cause.

May be the radiator fans are not working. Check the radiator fans.

I would check the thermostat, it is a very inexpensive part (usually less than $10), also you may wish to run her by the dealer or reputable mechanic to see if the head gasket is blown. That is the NUMBER 1 reason for overheating in stop and go traffic. Best of luck.
