Fuel economy is not bad but some of these cars use oil. I average about 26mpg in mountain driving in my 2015 Forester.

The 2.5i w/ CVT's efficiency is actually quite high. What lowers it on the highway in the Forester/OB/CT iterations is the poor Cd's of these elevated chassis. Hence the best eco is achieved by the lower Imp and Legacy variants. That said, since handling of ALL these too-tall variants is wonky, I no longer recommend them except for the 2013-2014 OB (disclaimer: I chase these for clients).
Doing 80 on the freeway in a CVT Forester I can get around 30 mpg. slightly less in a 6 speed version. The reason the CVT gets better mileage at high speeds is the high final gear ratio. If the 6 speeds had the same final gear ratio they would get the same mileage.

I would've guessed 28-29mpg at 80mph. I noticed a solid 32mpg at lower highway speeds in a '13 OB this week. Must be global warming....
The mileage on cars with the two different transmissions is pretty much the same until you get over 70. The CVT's final gearing is way higher. I wonder why Subaru did not spread the gears out a little more on the 6 speed to equal the CVT? Maybe to perpetuate a myth that CVT's are better?

Subie's manual trannies have always been shorter than their autoboxes to help stick drivers have stronger perceived acceleration. The diff between the old 4EAT and the 5 or 6 speed sticks was about 14%...pretty large. That diff canceled any possible savings from being directly linked. I always told my clients that the autobox was the better transmission under 20 and over 70, with the stick being more "fun" only in between.
