No you do not have to use Premium gas, you can use Mid-grade but never use Regular on a Luxury performance vehicle. You will get better performance and MPG's with premium gas.

having had two ES350's a 2007 and a 2012. Between the two cars i totaled 100,000 miles. I used regular gas in the car, got 31-32 miles to the gallon on highway trips (65+ mpg) and 24.7 avg on mixed driving. The car never pinged, started on first button push and made me happy every day. If it was AWD i would have a 3rd one. Always fast never hesitated and gave me a smile each day. I simply LOVED these cars. The knock sensor on the car always performed perfectly and the cars never so much had any engine or performance issues. As an engineer, frankly all the discussion is nonsense, the cars ran great. I bought regular fuel today for 1.49 gallon, Premium as 2.55 you have to be kidding if you think that is worth the extra money to make you feel a little bit better.

it is just a six cylinder motor, the same as my acura had. I used regular all the time in it with no issues at all. 240K and still running like a charm. I just gave it to my son and bough a lexus ES and hope it treats me as well.

I just got a 2017 ES and they said it's designed to use regular. But people some recommend using 91 premium for better performance and engine life. So i'm confused to what I should use. I guess I go with what the dealer said. But I have many luxury cars and I never used regular 87 gas in them.

Older ES350 and some other Lexus used to recommend premium but the same engine in a Camry was using regular. This difference was the Lexus could advertise slightly better performance HP and torque figures then Camry. Lately Lexus has dropped to recommending regular and so did the performance specs. Now same as Camry, so I guess for Lexus the sigma of premium wasn't worth it.

Regular is fine. And, it's a fallacy that higher octane gas results in better fuel mileage. The only thing higher octane gas does compared to lower (regular gas) is prevent knocking (preignition)

I have a 2009 ES. The manual says to use 91 octane. Real premium is 93 octane--too high. I first used 93 octane to fill up the tank when I bought the car. I drive it until I have half a tank and then fill up with 89 octane. Then I drive until I have half a tank and fill up with 93 octane. This keeps the gas in my tank at an average of 91 octane, which is what Lexus recommends. I keep a record in my car of which octane I used at the last fill up. Just remember to always fill up when you reach half a tank. I've owned the car for 5 years and I've had no problems.

Can the premium gas cause any malfunction of engine. I have a 2010 es350 which recommends premium.

Why 2010 es350 must use premium gas while the same engine in the 2015 RX350 uses regular unleaded fuel?

I believe the answer is that Toyota (Lexus) recalibrated the engine to use regular. I have a 2009 Lexus ES with the 3.5L motor and it is rated at 272 HP. It uses premium. I have the same motor in my 2018 Toyota Avalon and it's rated at 268 HP but uses regular. It's obvious to me that they decided to recalibrate the engine to use regular and lost only 4 HP. By the way, I can't tel the difference in the performance.

Just bought a 2016 Lexus ES 350 can I use mid grade gas in it

I will use Premium gas in my GS 350 but if I travel to remote parts of Canada I may be forced to use regular gas since that is all the stations sell. Hopefully, doing that for a few days won't damage the engine.

owners manual for 2010 - 2012 model is recommended regular gas

The engine specs were changed, so that starting in 2011, you can use regular gas. Before that, premium is recommended--although many owners have sworn that they did not find it necessary.

As hnrcs stated above. I found starting in 2011 for the ES 350 Lexus no longer recommends using premium grade gas. Just purchased a 2008 so I will be probably be switching back and forth between grades as it appears from the comments using regular grade is ok for model years 2010 and older.
