Trip meter (ILL.5)??

I noticed my Trip Meter (odometer A) of my Subaru Outback 2005 read ILL.5 then back to mileage then continue switching back an forth.  Any ieas as to what ILL.5 means and why this woul occur?

ILL is the illumination of your dash gauges. numbers go from 1-6.
