auto playing up

hi, i own a 99 wrx which is having automatic gear box problems, it will drive fine for ages then all of a sudden it will kick back a gear and rev its head off or when you start to drive off it will hold in 1st or 2nd gear untill you punch it then changes, ive had it on a scan tool and taken it to a gearbox work shop, which when their didnt play up, last time it happened it also felt like the engine was being turned on & off by a toggle switch ,after i changed the fuel filter it nearly went away all together, filter was changed bout 8mths ago, any ideas would be appreciated , not sure how to get replys so i can be e mailed at - amnlawns@hotmail.com    thanks again adam.
