Stalled car!! But starts in park?!

I have a 2001 Rav4. My car recently loss
power on the freeway it felt like it was about
to stall. I kept it at a even speed and it didn't.
As soon as I got off the freeway it died. I
restarted it at the third attempt. Every time I
put in drive it died out. As it drove it puttered
and pulled back no power then died again
every stop. I had very little gas in the car. I
added has no change. Drove it home with
several dies out. Oh and it felt like when
power finally came back it acellerated!??
