Why would the engine in my 1992 automatic Paseo stall when braking to a stop?

It doesn't happen all the time, but occasionally the engine stalls when coming to a stop at a stop light or to park. It will happen once or twice a day when the engine is up to operating temperature.

Hi mmadden, It sounds like fuel starvation. Check the fuel filters (there may be more one). Also check your fuel pump. I've also heard of similar issues due to mis-adjusted warm idle on the carb. Hope this helps!
Will it stall or lug down while idling? Or is it strictly with braking? If it stalls while idling, it may be a problem with airflow, for example if you have a LeBra on the hood, it could be smothering the intake, as mine was. Or it may be time for a new air filter. If it is only while braking, then I would start with dvigano's suggestions, and maybe run some fuel injector cleaner through it. While your at it, take the opportunity to check your plugs, air-filter, and fluids. Never hurts ;) PS: I had a similar problem with my 90 automatic Camaro. Unfortunately it was never resolved.
Take the air intake off and thoroughly clean the throttle body housing. If you look carefully at the bottom of the opening you will see a small passage this usually clogged with oil, give this a good shot of cleaner. You will be good to go for another year.
It could be your idle air control valve going out. If it gets bad enough, your car will shut down every time you slow down. The rpms should be at 650 at neutral. If they jump around or dip below that, then have a mechanic check. An idle air control valve is easy to change yourself but a bit orivey, so make sure that's really the problem before you spend $120 or so on a new one. Its to the left part of the intake manifold and can be removed with a 10mm wrench or an adjustable spanner. The part #is 17630-11050
