Question type: Maintenance & Repair

car has oil in cylinders and on electrodes of spark plugs.  Will not start.
Will engage is gas pedal held to floor.  Gets up to 1000 RPM then dies
and will not try to start unless I bump the ignition a number of times.  If I
count correctly it will try to start again with same results.  Today I was
told that in addition to the oil in the cylinder there is now gas and says I
have either bad rings or bad valves.  What about a bad timing belt?

These are multiple issues. It sounds like your engine is just plain worn out, the rings are allowing oil in the combustion chamber(s) and who knows what else is going on, this also causes a lot of blow-by and the PCV is sucking a lot of oil back through from crankcase. Not the belt

Take it to a good, honest mechanic- if it sounds like too much money to fix it, take it to another good garage and get a second opinion- that is a cool car, and worth fixin' up- if you get lucky, it might be somethin' simple-
