Does California require smog testing for 1996 Diesel Chevy 2500 HD pick-up?

I'm purchasing a pick-up and need to know if modifications are necessary to
drive legally in California. It's being shipped from out of state and I doubt it
meets criteria for smog if not smog exempt. Some cars are exempt diesel
included but not sure if mine is included. 1997 Chevy Silverado 2500 turbo
diesel .

A 97 should be exempt if the GVWR is less than 14,000 pounds. https://www.smogtips.com/diesel-smog- test.cfm#:~:text=Diesel%20smog%20inspections%20are%20required,is%20registered%20in %20this%20State.
