Burnt fluid is not a good sign. You could try replacing the fluid, but it may or may not help.

I am thinking she is done. however, you could do a couple hundred buck experiment and replace the fluid and get a new filter.

If the truck is shifting gears ok (even with the whine) and you live near a "Jiffy-Lube" , for about $130.00, they will force pump out the old fluid with this 'Mega-Buck' machine that you can watch, as the old fluid travels up into the machine and the new fluid is forced in. Takes about 45 minutes to do and pretty neat to watch. Also, ask about a filter screen replacement. Might be an extra charge for that? Mine didn't need one. Good Luck and Let Us Know, ok?
