The gear oil in my rear end

I check the fluid in my rear end and it's
brown really thick like creamy kind of fluid in
there what could it be

If you bought the vehicle used it's quite possible someone put grease in there it's a trick to quiet the rearend so they can sell it I would just replace with new gear oil an go from there
