Steering on Toyota Tacoma

A common problem with a lot of vehicles. Since the power steering is operated by fluid pressure generated from a belt-driven pump, when you're operating at lower speeds there is less fluid assist.

What if you have this and don't have power steering?

Intermediate Steering Shaft #2 is seizing as on most Tacomas, causing a stiff steering problem. Mine is 2008 with same problem (32500 miles)

Make sure your truck is in regular drive and not in 4 wheel high. I own a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 and it does have a hard time turning in the 4 wheel high mode. It does not in regular drive. Make sure your 4x4 converter switch is in regular drive. I think the switch is 2H, 4H and 4L. Switch needs to be on 2H. If your switch is in 2H position then your vehicle is stuck in 4H and never switched over therefore you have been driving in 4H all the time and your vehicle needs to be fixed.

check your idle speed if it is to low the wheel will be hard to turn. try lightly pressing the pedal while trying to turn . if it turns easyier then you will know

When you have stiff steering spray that little universal joint in steering column under the hood with a lubricant. If it frees it up, it will eventually need to be replaced. I have a 2013 tacoma tacoma 4 x 4 4 cyl stick shift and just found out that with 38,000 miles the lower steering knuckle and shaft have to be replaced @ $ 400. It is very hard steering when parking or turning sharp. I would think a universal joint would last a lot longer than that . Really disappointed in that result, and clutch linkage at transmission also needs frequent lubrication as it will jam the clutch so hard it will not move.

I am afraid that we will get peanuts for it on a trade-in, if anything at all! I suggest to you that we all get together to start a class-action suit against Toyota to resolve all of our problems! Hi, I’m Richie, I have 2006 Tacoma and I’m having problems with my Steering it’s very stiff, the rear suspension always sucked. A little bit of weight and it always bottoms out. But the steering is pretty bad. I will try to lubricate it and see what happens.

Ritchie there was a recall on the rear springs. check it out you may qualify for new springs. If in Canada try this site https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/my-toyota/recalls In USA... www.nhtsa.gov/recalls

Hi, Pat here. Just had a second steering rack installed in less than 6 weeks. This last time the right seal (on the steering rack) was leaking to the point where the belt went & steering pump ceased. So we replaced steering rack, pump & belt. Still had a problem, so we replaced pressure hose leading from the pump to steering rack. Still have a problem. I'm joining the lawsuit against Toyota with Wayne Besso (above).
