my car engine will stop and or not start at any given time - has been doing this for years - doesn't ever replicate when I take it to the shop.

It could be also due to a faulty ECM, faulty ignition coil or module...It's really hard to say without trying to diagnose this. Ask the mechanic to keep it for a few days and attach a scanner to it which will record data on it if/when it fails. This way they can see exactly what is happening at the time of failure. Sometimes this is the only way to go with an intermittent problem like this.
