When did it start doing this and does it make any sounds when you put it into the forward gears

Hunter has a question we need to give you an accurate answer. But not knowing anything else it is probably shot in need of rebuilt/ replacement. It has 'clutches' inside for forward and reverse. Since reverse is not used much and never at high speed it can be good while the others are burnt up. Pull the dipstick and put it right up to your nose, and if it has a burnt odor, not good.

i had the same problem in my plymouth. the engine would idle and rev up in the forward gears. forward gears were gone but reverse worked fine. pulled the dipstick and it was a burnt black/brown color and smelled kind of like burnt rubber. best bet is to just get it rebuilt.
