Can i run full length headers with the smoog hookup and pass the visual inspection?

Asked by lotuselan1964 Sep 18, 2015 at 03:05 AM about the 1987 Chevrolet Corvette

Question type: Car Customization

I want to install full length headers but I'm told by some they won't pass emission. They have the exact same lines as my stock setup I'm new to trying to get around emmission testing. My corvette is 1987. How much cam seems to be exceptable before i'm in trouble also. I would like to run about 220 @ .050 if possible. any advice would help.

I believe if you register your car as a historic vehicle, since it is 28 yrs. old, you can get away from emissions. But that year car I don't know why it wouldn't pass putting headers on it, as long as what-ever smog devices on the motor are in working order, (air pump). Now is that 220 lift your talking about? My stock cam in my 1995 truck is bigger (like 334 lift) In selecting a cam the best thing to do is talk to the experts, Com Cams for one. You realize, you would need to replace lifters, push-rods & rocker-arms to do it wright. In doing this you will defiantly will be messing with the emissions that stock pollution devices probably would not keep up with. A lot of factors living in a state that checks emissions. Just adding headers should be no problem.

As far as just the headers, duels or what ever, get new cats also, these cars won't pass emissions without them.

A good header shop like Hooker, or Doug Headers know what is necessary to get around the smog rules of the state you live in. Some state they are 49 state legal, meaning not for sale in California. Others state 50 state legal, for any state of the nation. Call the manufacture customer service themselves. Some shops will sell you the product, telling you it will pass, and will not give you the money back or take the product back once it is on if it fails inspection. Homework my son, homework. Headers are on a lot of vehicles here in California, and are smog legal.
