I would assume you could use the Mazda M5OD-R2 5 speed that they used in the 88 to 96 F-150. but you would have to do the tranny cross member and drive shaft too. If the truck is 4X4 then you will have to do all those plus the front drive shaft and the transfer case. I would keep the 4 speed and you wont have problems. I have a 86 with a 300 and a 4 speed and wouldnt change it for anything. this truck isnt meant to be good on gas or fast thats why they never offered a 5 speed in a carb'd 300.
I just install the M50D-R2 5 speed in my 1975 f-250 and work good, but i spect better hwy speed or lower rpm but i never count with the 4.10 gear in the axle, and now am lookin for somebody knows what is most recomended is 3.75 or 3.55 is the smaller i can put un a dana 60. And if you do i recomend get the crossmember from the truck you get the tranni if you can ; )
I put 354 gears in mine what did you do with your drive shaft slip yoke with u bolts that's what I'm looking for I need a part number
Zfs542 is the 5 speed of choice for these trucks . the mazda 5 speed isn't worth a flip! The zf is a heavy duty unit with granny low and 5th gear is overdrive! My 88 has 400,000 and still shifts like new.
I have a 1984 F150 with the 4.9 and it’s a 2x4 and it has 355000 km and runs like new, I recently pulled the automatic 3 speed and converted it to a 5 speed manual, I got the 5 speed out of a 96 F150 . Other than the fact I can’t use my mechanical speedometer cable , I am very happy with the better gas mileage and it’s more fun to drive
