What would cause 1976 f250 to stop running

Asked by GuruB4GX Apr 09, 2017 at 04:33 PM about the 1976 Ford F-250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving down the freeway and it turned off. Thought it ran out of gas.
Out gas in it and tried to start it. At first the truck would crank over with the
key now it wont crank with the key.  Just trying to get ideas on what it could
be. I have checked all fuses and replaced the ignition switch

Your battery is run down from trying to start it. First I would check to see if the distributor shaft gear pin has sheared off. Check by taking the distributor cap off, and with the rotor in place try and see if you can turn the distributor shaft, rotor. It should not be able to turn. If it does turn then the pin is sheared from the gear on the shaft. If all is good there then I would have the Ignition Control Module checked at an auto parts store.
