Why will my 79 f250 not stop trying to crank. And negative battery cable gets really hot. Have to disconnect battery to get it to stop trying to crank. Why?

The negative cable getting is to much resistance from the starter, replace it.

That will stop it from trying to crank by itself? Oh. The jumper cables melted at the handle too. Does that sound like the same issue?
