Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Mechanic told me that it was a good idea to just change out the water pump now because it is prone to fail at about 70 K miles-does anyone know if this is true?

I have a 99 with the 2.5 in it. I have about 110000 miles on it and never had a waterpump problem. I would say that if your having other work done and it's nothing more than buying a new pump and swapping them out sure. If he wants to charge you an additional 500-600 dollars, wait til it's positively bad. Just my opinion though.

thanks Haugkur.....at 70K the mechanic said change it now before it fails because they are prone to fail at about this mileage ....he said if it fails in a certain way it can spew water into your oil and than do serious damage to the engine....

70,000 miles is not many miles if the car has been well maintained . I would never change a good functioning part needlessly. You will have plenty of warnings should it begin to go bad. That should not be for another 30,000 miles or two years ! Sure there are ways a water pump can leak into an engine but not easily . The mechanics tactics of trying to frighten you is a form of extortion you should get a new and hopefully more ethical; mechanic , there are plenty of good honest mechanics out there. You do not need to accept shake downs.
