Most of the time you can take off the door panel and get to the screws to remove the window actuator to remove and inspect it for functionality. I helped someone with an outback that got the window stuck up and I had to use an assortment of wrenches to get to the hidden bolts. I also had to make small modifications to the regulator so the lock tabs wouldn't restrict removal of the regulator.
