I got a 04 dodge 4x4 its part time not full. Can i run it with no cv shaft on the front. My differential has a seal it wont leak. I just need to remove for few days till parts come in

I have a 2wd same year and looked at bearing and it looks exact same even has the hole threw it that cv shaft would go threw if it was 4x4 so would it hurt my bearing to run it with no cv shaft

Yes....but......if you remove the cv shaft, where the threaded portion goes through the wheel bearing assembly, the bearing could walk out and cause the wheel to come off. Could even cause excessive bearing wear, unless you installed a big bolt through it to secure it. I have done this with Explorer awd's, but suggest that the risk if not done properly is great, not to mention the crap that might enter the dif.

The diff is sealed noting can get in it. I called dodge this am they said pull the shaft and drive as long as u want with no shaft it wont hurt abything. That the 2 wd are exact same set up and have no shafts. Thanks for the response though

Ok. Are you talking about the "drive shaft from transfer case to from dif, or the cv shafts from dif to front wheels? Drive shaft, yes you can. If your talking the shaft from dif to front wheel, someone is telling you wrong, the wheel bearings are not the same. On a 4wd, the outer threaded part keeps the wheel bearing in place, different that the 2wd version.

I stand corrected. I looked the parts up, they are the same part number. Evidently, Dodge has the bearings designed different that others, so that they are locked to prevent walking out of the bore. Explorers and most others, require a mechanism ie bolt or cv hub stub to pass through and secure the bearing from the inner hub from walking out. Dodge must have been thinking on that one, as simplifying the parts to use one part number. By the way....I drive a Ram too. LOL

Both Moog And Timken have different part numbers for 2 wheel verses 4 wheel hub assemblies. I personally tried this last year on my 2002 Ram and it resulted in bearing failure on both sides with 10 miles... I recommend you continue your research or Focus your energy on repairing it correctly...

Pull axle out knock u joint out remove axle spline back in tigthe Shaft nut plug axle housing check fluid u should be ok
