Crankshaft position sensor magnet covered in oil?

Asked by Justus Nov 19, 2018 at 05:18 PM about the 2002 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 02 Dodge Ram 1500,recently discovered
it wasn't getting spark keeping it from starting,
traced it to the CPS and changed it, no issues for
about a week. Cold start early this morning went
great with no issues, tried a warm start to leave
later on and it wouldn't, so I pulled the sensor just
to check it out, noticed the magnet on the end was
covered in oil, I wiped it off and reinstalled it,
started right up. What would cause this?

I don't think oil covering the sensor has anything to do with it not functioning. If your fuel pump isn't running it's something different because the crank sensor on most vehicles doesn't have anything to do with the fuel pump activation only with spark getting to the plugs
