What transmission do I have?

Asked by seahook71 Sep 10, 2012 at 07:54 AM about the 1994 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 94 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.9l 360 with an automatic transmission. First problem was oil leaking from the engine so I replaced the rear main seal after puting all back together and starting there was a bad grinding noise from the front of trany. What I need to know is this the ring gear im hearing and if so how hard will this be to change? Does the transmission need to be dropped to change ring gear? How expensive will this be? And am I in the right direction with this or is it something else?

Should be an A518. A518 is Dodge's older transmission model. This tranny ('89- '94) is hydraulically conrolled with a non lock up torque converter and no over drive. A518 was replaced in 1994 with the 46RH, no overdrive. The 46RE goes on 97-02 trucks and includes the overdrive feature.

www.ramforumz.com is great for Didge Q's www.theautochannel.com has pretty decent $$ on re-builts. Hope this helps!

Question I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.2 (318) engine with the automatic transmission what is the transmission I looked for the tag no number and I can’t tell if it’s a 3-4 speed ( I brought it for 700 bucks and when I brought it at the time I had to get it to 3-5k rpms to move it in drive and reverse and ik thr trans is bad but I am looking for the right transmission rebuild kit for it ) ans I got a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 with a locked up engine I’ll be swapping engine with the 96 engine into the 99 (the fram is twisted on the 96) can anyone help me with the transmission?
