What model transmission do I have?
Asked by tom2badcat Apr 04, 2012 at 06:37 PM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT Club Cab RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Transmission went out in 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. Its the 360/5.9 liter V8. Im researching to find a used one to replace it. What year models are compatible and what types? I mean will the tranny from a 2500 fit or is there only one type I am looking for?

first of all standard or automatic?
and if you are looking to replace yours, especially with a used transmission, it would be cheaper and it would make more sense to get yours rebuilt. torqueflite is common, should be cheap
yes the transmission from a 2500 will fit, the 97 1500's and 2500 w/5.9 v8 came with a 46RE which has a lighter duty torque converter, and different bands. the 2500 prolly has a different transfer case though.
47RE's are V10/Cummins I6 specific and will not fit.

My truck is automatic 2 wheel drive. 5.9 liter 360 Gas engine. Im just trying to do a local search for a tranny that will fit my engine. Im told from another source that its a 518. is that the same thing as a 46RE? When Im on ebay looking at trannys from 95 models and 99 models...it will say its not compatible...i believe they are. just not sure exactly which year models are compatible though. This tranny has been rebuilt like three times so I dont want to do it again because it seems there is something else going on. i figured trying a different tranny might be a better idea. Im looking for an A grade used one from a junk yard or individual. Just wasnt sure exactly what i was looking for. seems to be some confusion about compatibility with other year models and the exact type i am asking for.
no a A518 is an old 3 speed non lock up, non OD transmission. the 46RE is an A518 with a lock up torque converter, and overdrive. A518's go on 89-94 trucks, 46RH goes on 94-97 46RE goes on 97-02 trucks.
tom2badcat answered 12 years ago
ok so now the obvious question...which is more proper for my truck? a 46RH or 46RE? since both apply to year 97...and what is the difference between the two? So I am looking for an A518? and thats the same as 46RE? sorry if I seem uneducated here but i havent had the truck very long and I know very little about trannys to begin with
tom2badcat answered 12 years ago
i just re-read your last post...im guessing im looking for an A518/46RE? Is that right?
tom2badcat answered 12 years ago
mine does have overdrive so i gather thats the one
A518's are an old transmission, with a non lock up torque converter, and no over drive, so its 3 speeds and hydraulically controlled. a 46RH is a newer transmission with a lock up torque converter, and over drive, also Hydraulically controlled (note the H in 46 RH) the 46RE is a transmission with a lock up torque converter, and overdrive, it is electronically controlled (note the E in 46RE) both the 46RH and 46RE are improved variations of the A518.
odds are your looking for the 46RE
tom2badcat answered 12 years ago
mine is electronic...i do know that for sure...theres wires going to the drivers side of the tranny and a wiring harness bundled up there with zip ties
yup then you want the 46RE
tom2badcat answered 12 years ago
another curious question...will a 46RE out of a jeep with same size engine work on my truck? I found this one on ebay Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ 5.9L Limited 46RE Automatic Transmission 98
its going to have a different output shaft, because jeeps are 4x4

Will a transmission in a 98 dodge ram 1500 5.9 fit in a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9
no, I had a 99 Dakota rt and i put a tranny from a 2000 Dakota rt in it and it would just shift into 4th gear at like 10 miles an hour and the trans temp light was flashing codes as soon as you turned the key on. I had a shop convert something with the wiring harness inside the tranny and it worked great. They said dodge changed the electronics in them between 1999 and 2000
did you replace your torque converter during the 3 times ya rebuilt your trans...another problem the dodge trans has if you have never done is the control mod solinoid and pressure sensor..if they go out the trans wont shift and will spin out like the trans is slipping..thats whats wrong with mine...that kit through rockauto.com is 121 total shipped to your door..goodluck

would that jeep 46re work in a 97 ram 1500 4x4 5.9?
Question... how about a 96 Dodge 1500 1/2 ton 4x4 360 gas with overdrive transmission for a 01 Dodge 2500 (3.4) 4x4 360 gas with overdrive?
There is some wrong information above, an A518 most certainly IS a lockup 4 speed overdrive transmission. It came out in 1988 and is based on the 3 speed torqueflight 727. It was renamed the 46RH and then the 46RE as the valve body was converted electric. The lighter duty 4 speed automatic started life being called an A500 came out in 1989 and renamed 40RH, 44RH, 40RE and 44RE. It was based on the torqueflight 929.

I have a 1993 RAM 250 with a 5.2l magnum and A518 with lockup converter and electronic overdrive. It's a Federal model and has US ARMY ID numbers stenciled on under the license plates. I have towed 20,000 pounds from Houston to Michigan with it. It is a tough transmission and I recommend it. The difference between the two wheels drive and 4 wheel drive transmissions are the tail shafts. Plus the ¾ ton transmission has stronger bands and internal parts. Make sure that the splines on the shafts are the same. When you go to check out the transmission take your transfer case to test fit. If the transmission has a transfer case installed then you will need to test fit your drive shafts to the transfer case.
is it the same transmission for a manual? I'm assuming you're all speaking automatic but I have a 2001 5.2l 1500 v8 and I am needing a new tansmission for it but I'm having a hard time figuring out which one I need.

this isn't the answer to anyone's questions....would a 91 dodge ram t- case bolt up to my 1997 dodge ram 1500 5.9l magnum I'm almost positive it's a 46re, 4 speed auto made by Chrysler

Help, I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9l automatic I put in a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 tranny. Shaft is larger. Can I change the yoke in the differential to accept larger drive shaft?
I just finished doing my ram 2500 and still do not know if it was a 46re or 47re. You might have a smaller trans. like a 44.
dodge trans have a number on the drivers side above the drain pan. The second? number is the torque load and mine was a 5.
Not an answer to anyone.I have a question that I need answered. 97 ram 1500 5.2 4x4 EC SB. 46RE tranny was pulled and cracked open before I got it. I ended up replacing shift rod. reinstalled. It leaks between transfer case and gear box. There was no gasket between the two. Should there be or is it rear main sealed... The important one. I have no spark and fuel pump doesn't come on. The crank sensor on top of bell housing needs to be replaced has been spliced and plug wires don't match sensor wires. Is that going to keep everything from working like that? Plus I was told that it was difficult to get sensor positioned correctly distance wise against torque converter.

I have a 95 dodge ram 1500 4x4 I put 97 parts on it. Front and rear axles, transfer case,
The 97 transmission is a 8 pin 4 speed , the 95 tranny is a 3 pin 3 speed, I can't plug any thing up but I have it bolted in, no problem. Had to get a custom driveshaft in the rear, and I have to manually shift the automatic, 1st then 2nd then drive which is 3rd and can't shift to 4th cause it's not electronically plugged in. So basically it's a manual automatic

Please help guys cause I do a lot of hauling and towing with my truck and I want a strong tranny
Can I put a 99 tranny from a Dodge 1500 5.9in a 98 dodge 1500 (both auto) with out changanging anything
I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500, with a 4.7 l engine im curious how would i go about finding out what type of transmission I have, i'm looking to replace the engine and I was curious to know if a 5.9 v8 engine will connect to the transmission, i'm a newb at this stuff..
David123 and Dustin the tranny for a 5.9L will only bolt up to another 5.9L engine. Bolt patterns are different. Also the trannys must both be either hydraulic or electric shift and are not interchangeable. The wire harness will not match up. And will not shift properly.
David123 to identify your tranny on the drivers side of tranny where the pan pan bolts to tranny, just above the pan on the edge is a long code stamped into side about 25 characters long. It will give you the model of tranny date manufactured vehicle engine and size. Also o. The top part of bell housing there are numbers and letters about 2" 3" tall that will tell you model of tranny.

For all the guys that think they kno what they are talking about 94 and 95 dodge ram has the 46rh tranmission but if you are looking for one for you truck from 97 to 2001 are the same from late 95 to early 97 the wiring is different as of the plugs for the tran well matter of fact most of your wiring is different 94 to 96 there are 2 plugs that hook into your computer from 97 to 2001 there is 1 plug that hooks into your computer the injectors crank sensor coil sensor and the speed sensors are different just do you research and look it up
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
Neoguard you are wrong about the trans not working from a 5.2 to a 5.9 they are both the same block actually they a pretty much the same motor but the bottom end crank has a longer stroke little bit bigger pistons and cam not sure of the sizes but the blocks are the same same as the top end this only goes for the magnum motors not the la small blocks..

Superdodge98 I was led to believe that if put a different tranny in a vehicle other than what was in it before you would have to reset the computer and/or download data that would work with tranny. Is that correct. Because I had a 46RE and replaced it with a tranny that I got from a totaled truck same year and model. Tranny has different numbers on bell than my old one. But figured it would work since same truck as mine (97 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.2l). Was also told Tran y from 5.9 wouldn't bolt up as well as computer thing. Sorry if I gave wrong info. This my first dodge. Everything else is a ford. Last 5 months has been, well, "fun". Dodge trannys suck (no pun intended).
I have a 96 1500 4x4 318 will the 360 trans work or not
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
I'm not sure about the whole computer thing that has never happened to me... and as I stated before 5.2 and 5.9 are the same blocks. Idk who told you different but they are wrong I'm pretty sure that the 6cylinder bell bolt pattern is the same to
Superdodge 98 the 360 transmission is coming out of a 97 or 98 4x4 witch ever will work without modifying it
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
You are going to have to figure out weather yours in a hydraulic shift or electric shift. 95 and 96 they put hydraulic shift transmission in the ram but late 96 is when they started putting elertic shift trannys
If it helps it has push button od on the dash
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
Look at your computer dose it have 3 plugs going into it or just 1 big one
The computer has 3 plugs into it
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
Electric shift so one out of a 97 or 98 will work
So the 360 transmission will work on my 318 witch torque converter do I need to use
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
You need to use the one out of the 360 yeah it will work if you look at your computer 3 plugs means it's elertic shift 1 big plug means it hydraulic shift

i have a 1995 dodge dakota 4x4 automatic with the 318 magnum.. i need to replace the transmission. if i read correctly, i can use thr transmission from a 360 magnum, a transmission from a jeep with the 318 engine, and the transmission from a dodge ram with the 318 engine.. right?
Superdodge98 answered 8 years ago
Well it all depends weather it's a hydraulic transmission or elertic shift transmission and you have to make sure all the sensor are the same dodge changed their transmission so much in the 90s

And timmy good luck on the tranny swap on a dakota it's alot eaiser to take the torsion bars out instead of trying to work around them and you got 2 plates from the front rear that's bolted to the motor and tranny... and what is your transmission doing you might not have to replace it
TimmyNjess answered 8 years ago
It has shavings in it. I lost overdrive on my way to town. Then on my way back from town, it stopped pulling. I haven't found a transmission that I can afford yet..

question i have 1998 318 dodge 4 wheel drive the junk yard sold me a transmission out of a 360 dodge will it work transmission man said the toqert converter out of the 360 wont bolt up to the 318 fly wheel does any one know he said to put the 318 converter in the 360 transmission help anyone
It will work I just put a transmission in my dodge it a 360 and the transmission is out of a 318
(318 to 360 Trans exchange) The reason for torque converter change is that the 360 is an external balanced engine (with a counter weight on the converter) and the 318 is an internal balanced engine. I know this to be true on sixties, seventies, and eighties models, but not sure about any of the newer models.
I have a 1994 dodge ram 318 5.2 2wd. Will a 1996 5.9 360 engine bolt up with my 2wd trans?

Douglaspider answered 8 years ago
You have to check and see it used to be that a 360 was an externally balanced engine and a 318 was an internally balanced engine you have to check and see if it is still true but a 360 torque converter will have a big weight on it and a 318 torque converter will not
Douglaspider answered 8 years ago
Make sure that you check and see if the 360 is externally balanced and 318 internally balanced the Transmissions all the same but you have to use your torque converter for 318 torque converter will not work in the old style late early seventies I am not sure about your stuff
