02 Mazda Miata engine stall out

Asked by Genenterri2 Jul 10, 2020 at 09:53 PM about the 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Stutters and dies after driven for about 60 miles and outside temperature is
hot. (90 deg)  both cooling fans are working. Crank sensor has been replaced.
IGN coils and wires replaced. Now the engine light is on and code says the
ECM needs to be replaced and the bank 1 cam timing is a little retarded.
When the engine cools down the car runs beautifully. It starts on first flop.  No
skip no problems until it gets hot.   What direction do I take???

You have probably fixed this already, I'm having a very similar issue if not exactly the same. The only difference is that the code only included the CPS P0012 code. I'm changing everything you mentioned, plus timing belt, and the actual camshaft positioning sensor. What did you do to fix it?
