How do you know if your ecu has gone ????????

have you tryed the starter ? when you turn it over does it crank ? try looking over all the vacum lines and check your spark plugs for spark *best done in the dark* in diagnosing a starting issue its always good to know what it does when you try to start it as well.. so in a brief description when you turn the key on does it make the normal buzzing noise to prime the pump, then when you turn the key does it crank over and try to start, if it cranks and doesn't start does it chook or simply not sputter at all .. Start from the top , check spark, so coil wires and plugs. NExt move on to fuel, check the lines for leaks, change the filter if it has not been changed in over a year especialy if you don't use supreme or premium gas. if there is no fuel in the lines and you hear the buzzing you most likely had it installed with the wires backwards or hte filter is clogged. If fuel is fine check all the airways to the throttle body, most cases you may have a clogged filter or your maf is to dirty, Check the vacuum lines and pumps. Make sure here is no breaks or leaks some of the rubbery plastic hoses like to snap from to much heat and old age. Any who let us know how all that goes. and where did you buy your alternators ? perhaps they were not rebuilt correctly. i have been having an issue with alternators myself lately and it was because they were not rebuilt correctly.

google map is your friend just search vw specialist and youl come up with all the specialists in your are for vw and audi. If you been using regular gas that would be your problem and your spark plugs are probably fouled. Audis can only be filled with the best high tes you can find ussaly located at petro can 94 octane.

he is likely speaking of the secondary small wire to the alternator. i had simalure power issues as well when my alternator went ca-put. the cooper end of that wire frayed off on my car and i replaced it with a aluminum tip and it had not been the same since.

So what's the fix on this??? Having same problem!

45,875

replace the wire end with a new copper tip or simply wrap the wire around the pole end and secure it with the bolt.

sounds like you either blew a fuse or a relay best way to figure that out is start pulling fuses and find a junk yard and grab a couple spare relays to test relay slots.

ok tell me everything you have done since the issues started and tell me exactly what it does when you try to start it. for example if you turn the key does the pump make a steady hum for roughly 8 seconds then shutt off beffore start or does it make irratic sounds. anouther example would be when you try to start it does the car stuter or simple does nothing but crank .

I have a 2003 VW Passat i park the car under a pine tree that has small needles for about 2 years after a rainy day I noticed the windows fog up and one day the carpet was wet driver side sponged the water then rained again wet again the the key remote wont work windows wont open interier lights dont work the problem was water under carpet CCM Module full of water broken wires corrosien i replaced wire harnes and module now car wont start i forgot to mention theres a drain under the battery was cloged with pine needles the battery half in water

45,875

sounds like you left it parked for way to long. Your at this point probaly dealing with a fuel system that has gotten gummed up from prolonged sitting. First off i would put some good high octane gas in the tank and maybe put an octane booster in. check for any other signs of broken and frayed wires. that battery will likely need to be replaced they are not ment ot be pluged in for over 2 years with out it being used. Once you get the car started i would take it for a nice long drive and get that tank of gas as empty as possible and then refill with high octane again to help clean the system. Shell gas would be the best to use

So I have a 2002 Vw Passat, 1.8 turbo, and it's having problems starting. So the engine turns over, but it doesn't start. If I keep turning the key for about 10-15 minutes then it starts. Usually I have to wait a couple minutes or else the car drives irratically, taking a few seconds to catch up with the pedal. After I start it and drive it around a bit, then it starts up just fine. Got my starter tested and they said that it was fine. Any ideas?

12 people found this helpful.
45,875

sounds like some sorta issue with a sensor. Why don't you try taking the maf and any other sensors in that air way out and clean them and check the air filter anything after that i would check crank case hoses for signs of sludge and if you can get your hands on a good coil pack try starting it with that also if you have not done it in over 60,000km I would replace the spark plugs and wires and get some of those plastic wire covers to go over them. Also are you in a damp or wet or cold climate ?

I have 2003 W8 and it cranks but won't start at times but then it does start and runs fine. I thought it was fuel pump but it doesn't sputter under load, don't think its spark, maybe gas not sure just trying to find and fix it before my wife makes me sell it

45,875

what size engine is in it ? if its a 3L engine it could be the igniton modual they can some times cause intermitant starting issues. they also have alot of vacum issues. one of the crank cases hoses usaly breaks or develops a crack and can cause some issues with idle and start up as well. tho it will help emensly to know what engine you have.

2008 vs pass at 2.0 turbo . Turns over but doesn't start . Sometimes it starts right up and runs . Did it yesterday and today . It started and ran for about 30 seconds then died . Could it be a fuel filter issue or fuel pump ? It's my sister in laws car . Also check engine light is on but doesn't have any codes that come up . I do know her turbo went out but not sure that would effect it not wanting to start and run . Added oil yesterday and it fired right up and ran all day .

6 people found this helpful.
45,875

have you been checking the oil ? and a regular obd scanner will not get the codes off the car they only grab surface codes.. You need tofind a specilist that can properly scan the car. If the turbo is blown it will cause alot of issues one of which is massive oil consumption and if the car does not have enough oil it will not start.

I have a 2009 passat 2.0t. It cut out (like i was running out of gas) but only for a few seconds and then was fine. A few days later i was driving down the highway and it started doing it again. It got really bad to the point that the car was shuttering. The engine light and the EPC light were flashing. I pulled over and turned it off and it would not start back up. It did crank over but did not start. I had it towed home and now it wont even crank over it just does a short jerk when i try to start it.

i would have it scanned and see what those codes are. but it sounds to me like it may have jumped the timing

I'm having a similar issue. My car has been putting out a P0411 code (secondary airflow injection system) and now a P0117 code (Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Low Input). The other night, it took a few times to start and this morning it took one try to start it. When I went to start it again, it wouldn't start at all. It does crank over, but it doesn't last. I have had to refill the antifreeze twice in a month, thinking there might be a leak or something. Would this contribute to my car not starting?

4 people found this helpful.
45,875

as the saying goes, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it is a duck. get it checked out the coolant should never need to be refilled. good posiblity it is the water pump.

4 people found this helpful.
90

If you have a bad coolant temp sensor damaged, your car won't start or it will only in cold weather but after it warm up and turn it off n try to start it again won't work. The CTS sends signals to the ECU if it dfoesnt get the proper readings the ECU would keep the engine off for safety. If you have to refill the coolant very often u most have a leak somewhere.

Well, it must be a short somewhere. Did you check the relays for fuel pump and for the Windows? There's also fuses in the driver side that power up the fuel once the relay is activated.

did you have the key recoded to the new ignition unit ? when you swap a key cylinder it requires all keys to be relinked to the car.

ok then have the car scanned by a vw/audi specialist shop alot of them will do it for free. it should tell you whats wrong.

what about vacum ? are all the lines good ? check for broken crank case hoses or make sure the ingiton switch was done proper. I am still leaning more towards the key needs to be resynced to the car. try puting in your old igniton switch see if it starts then.

My issue was the crankshaft position sensor. Changed it and it started right up.

deathjam4 my neighbor has a 2001 Passat they are giving me issue is when the key Is turn to start nothing at all happens I was told to just replace all fuses and relays. I have a new battery for it already and am wondering if there is anything else I could try. Or any other solutions. Every light on the dashboard comes on and stays on, the stereo is stuck in safe, no crank, they say it needs oil change, windows will not roll up or down they are stuck half way, only thing I’ve seen to found that works is the ac locks and lights. If you could send me a email at kylerclemons@gmail.com so we can keep in contact about this would be much appreciated

So I’ve had my vw Passat for 2 years and have had a ton of issues. Unfortunately I think it’s just a bad one cuz it’s been different things each time. I’d deff suggest checking the Fuses...I got stuck at 2am once cuz of a blown fuse. Some issue happened where car wouldn’t start but I’d get some power to the electrical if I pressed open/lock on the car, but not on my remote key fob. That time they replaced the ignition. Be sure to keep changing the oil regularly and checking the oil and for leaks. If oil is low I run a big risk of destroying a lot. My timing got out of wack and in no time the timing belt went. With these cars, once that happens you’re in big trouble. The entire motor had to be replaced. General maintenance goes a long way...had a fuel pump go which lead to a bunch of other issues, and it all traced back to the pump. I love my Passat, unfortunately it’s just been a big headache.

wdgsk try having the igniton looked at and the wiring at the fire wall. It also likely has a bad starter.

could be the fuel pump or perhaps a dirty fuel filter driver.

check your fuse box and check all your ground wires they are likely corroded some where.

Seeing all these comments I wish I never got this VW. I have a VW passat 2006 2.0t and it seem like every single time I fix it a month later something else is wrong. @Deathjam4 I hope you could give me a little advice. I was driving my vw one day and at the stop light I heard a beeping noise and the brake light on the dashboard started blinking. My car started to shake a little and my steering wheel locked up and my car cut completely off. I'm really confused whats wrong with it. Its over heating as well. I had the thermostat and thermostat housing replaced , a full tune up, a new battery, new water auxiliary pump, new coolant sensor too. My next idea is to get my water pump and alternator fixed but idk if thats the problem and i don't want to spend so much on that and still not be closer to solving the problem. Also I just bought a new battery and my car lights or anything wont come on. I have to get a jump for them to come on and once the cables are removed it shuts back off.

It sounds like the battery you purchased may be the wrong one for the car or it is a bad battery or is simply not properly fully charged. what your experiencing I believe is a lack of voltage. if you are over 200,000km then you likely can just simply have the alternator service at a alternator and starter repair shop which is defiantly what i recommend. for one its cheaper then buying a new one and much better then playing the shell game as most replacements alternators you will find are basically refurbished any ways. the only time you will have to replace the whole thing is if what happened to mine happend to yours. esentally my core rusted expanded and broke apart as it worked so my alternator once it sat for a month completly siezed. In most cases you can simply replace the brushes and your good i had one and sold it to a guy with the same modal of car its called a voltage regulator and it will fix any issues and can be done easily yourself. My alternator had 360,000 km on it before i had to scrap it and ended up having to use parts of my old one on the new one i bought but in the end still cost me over 300$ Canadian for a new alternator. If you do go new or refurbished tho be sure to compare the circuit board to your old one as some of them will have more capacitors then others. if you have any less then what you previously had you will run into voltage issues again. Sorry for the long story but i always give the details where details are due :)

97 Passat 2.8L. Crank no start. No power to fuel pump no spark. Jumpered fuel pump relay and pump runs. It’s a new fuel pump relay. Replaced crankshaft sensor still crank no start. No codes either. Going to see if ECM relay is getting signal from ECM. Hope it’s not ECM. Have seen in all online reading, it could be temp sensor as well.

Hello just wondering if I could get some help I have a 2008 Volkswagen Passat it cut off on me one day coming home from work way in October, the guy I took it to did a oil change, I bought a switch for it and it still will not crank anything would help

make sure battery ground wire (blackwire) and live wire are connected to their ends well. Sometimes carbon build-up (under cable connectors) hinders the current to follow.

Hi, I have a 2003 Passat w8 Engine. Put in brand new battery. Car started and I left it running for 10-15 minutes. I came back out to start it 3-4 hours later and got zero response from the car. No sound or turn over when turning key, no lights turn on, just the clock was on but very very dim. I'm wondering If I hooked up the two cables incorrectly that attach to the positive side of the terminal? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

We have a Passat TDI 2006 we have issues of it not starting in the morning (Qld Australia) one the glow plug light goes out it will usually start. We have also replaced the crankshaft angle position sensor but are now thinking it must be the wire or the crank itself. Those who have found the wire was the issue where absolutely was the faulty wife?

2006 2.0t Passat ( B6 ) Just had this problem ! If your car comes on all powered up but no cranking at all - CHECK STATER AND SOLENOID!! There is a wire that rotted off - goes between starter and solenoid. ITS A BARE WIRE AND ROTTS AWAY!! Stupid ass design. You will need a new starter. The wire is not a normal replaceable part. It ends inside the starter casing.

Deathjam can you email me i have a 07 passat tsi 2.0 T I cant figure out whats wrong and I just bought it. Kimmyglover1994@aol.com

I found this thread and thought I'd give it a shot. I have a 2007 Volkswagon Passat 2.0L B6. I've had some issues with it and I took it to a mechanic who made things worse. First it was driving but losing power, then would drive normal. the mechanic changed the fuses around, said they were ALL in the wrong place and supposedly added five new ones. I didn't even make it down the street before the car died completely. When I tried to re-start the car it cranked but nothing happened. I tried again and the cranking stopped and some smoke came out of the engine compartment. I called him and he was like-- well, not helpful, so I towed it home. I have a mechanic guy who works on toyotas that I know and he said the guy messed up the fuses pretty bad. We've since done a ton of research and triple checked that all the fuses are good and in the right place. We are in the process of checking relays now. If it isn't a relay-- what would cause my vehicle to not start at all-- not crank and sometimes it doesn't want to release the key. The rest of the vehicle has power-- the sunroof, windows and lights all work. I've had the battery tested and disconnect when we are not working on it to make sure i don't drain it somehow. Once i fix this issue, I have to figure out the original issue. del_valles@msn.com if you have any advice.. I'd love to get his car fixed and give it to my son who is graduating highschool this year.

DeathJam4 having similar issues when you get a chance would you message or email me?

I have a 2015 be Passat se 1.8L and my car turned on and drove it for a little until the car steering wheel locked and no power from the gas was going through. I pulled to the side, tried to turn it back on and it would crank but nothing happened. It eventually turned back on but would die again. Recently changed the batteries so I was told it was the fuel injector pump, so I changed that plus got an oil change and the car turned on low nothing and drove for maybe 10 minutes until the same thing happened all over again! This time it would crank but no radio lights/ac stopped working almost like my Battery was trying to give life back to the car but nothing. Any insight?

Hello I have a 2013 VW Passat Tdi SEL 2.0 L turbo diesel, with no ignition switch and it doesn’t turn on. I need help. The battery died completely and I’ve switched it and it still doesn’t turn on. What should I do next? This is the 2nd time it turns off, the first time was because a fuse blew and I replaced it and it turned on. But now it doesn’t turn on, I can hear the fuel pump crank so I know the fuel pump works, I just need to know what to do next. Any help is greatly appreciated!

@VwAlberto18, I have the same car with 77k odometer. I had a defective bolt break off timing belt, drilled out the bolt, reinstalled timing belt. Now the car is cranking but no start. I put a new battery in and it won't hold the charge. I spoke to a mechanic and I ordered a new crankshaft and a new camshaft position sensor. Both were $150, I understand that the two sensors work together to get the car started. Look into it. I pick the sensors up in a few days from dealer so I will let u know the result.
