I drained the transmission fluid from my 2004 VW passat and "A LOT" of it came out, but when I added the new fluid, it looked like A LOT LESS went in then it came out. Why?

Yes, drain and fill. It looked like close to a gallon of fluid came out but only about 2 1/2 quarts went in. I put it in until started to spill. Well...Let me ask, how much fluid does it hold?

Thanks for all the info. I finally got the fluid in... all 5 quarts but, for future reference, I found out that... the motor HAS to be running in order for the 5 quarts to go in. Thanks
