My 2000 Jetta will start but it takes about 10 tries

When I turn the ignition it will run for a second and then die. After 6 to 10 tries it will operate normally. This morning it died a block from my office and would just keep turning over but wouldn't start. After an hour I went back to try and move it so I wouldn't get a ticket. Any thoughts?
