Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm having problems with the driverside door lock. It does not lock with remote nor when lock is pushed down manually. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Hi vw99golf. Obviously you have some sort of component failure that is going to need to be dealt with by a dealer. You may have a remote issue but if it works on the passenger side and otherwise that's probably not it. Take a ride down to your local VW dealer and get it diagnosed. Good luck!

I really want to avoid the dealership. I was able to find an auto shop specializing in VW and knows what to do to fix the problem. But thanks anyway!

If this is a MkIV I believe I know what the problem is at I struggled with it myself. First of the driver side door lock cannot be pushed down manually. Its a precaution so you don't lock yourself out. The door latch assembly includes several micro switches to detect if the door is closed or not. This is call the door lock control module or something like that. Several of the sodder points go bad and the switches fails to tell the car the door is shut. Check to see if you have issues with the interior lighting due to this and it should almost garentee this is the problem. The module costs about $150 and would have to be replaced, however it is very difficult to do so yourself so I suggest you take it somewhere. Hope this helps.
